Our Story

Every great institution begins with a moment of foresight. For King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM), that moment came in 1963, when the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia — young, ambitious, and newly awakened to the vast resources beneath its sands — made a bold decision. It would not simply extract its wealth; it would build the minds to manage it. The College of Petroleum and Minerals opened its doors in Dhahran with a handful of students, a handful of professors, and an idea larger than the desert around them: that knowledge, properly cultivated, could transform a nation.

A Vision Born from the Desert

In the early 1960s, the Saudi government recognised that the country's future would depend on more than oil. It would depend on people. So they planted a seed — a small college focused on the sciences and engineering that underpinned the petroleum industry.

New colleges were established to meet the demands of a modernising economy: engineering, sciences, industrial management, computer science, and applied fields that stretched far beyond petroleum. Students from across the Kingdom — and eventually from around the world — came to Dhahran to study, research, and innovate.
